Virginia Board of Medicine

Dear Colleague:

I am writing to inform you of a new continuing education requirement for the next biennium.

The 2016 General Assembly passed law that requires the Board of Medicine to identify licensees with prescriptive authority that should obtain 2 hours of continuing education (CE) on topics related to pain management, the responsible prescribing of controlled substances, and the diagnosis and management of addiction.  The Board formed an ad hoc committee to set thresholds with data from the Prescription Monitoring Program by which licensees would be identified for the opioid CE.  After considering all issues, the committee recommended that, for this first biennium of required opioid CE, all licensees of the Board of Medicine with prescriptive authority should obtain the 2 hours of CE.  On December 2, 2016, the Executive Committee of the Board of Medicine approved this recommendation, and further added that the 2 hours be Type 1, unless the licensee’s profession does not distinguish between Type 1 and Type 2 CE.

You can find resources to satisfy the 2-hour requirement at a number of websites, including:

The Board thanks you for attention to this matter.

With kindest regards,

William L. Harp, MD
