APRN/NP/CNM Scope of Practice
APRN: Advanced Practice Registered Nurses
CNM: Certified Nurse-Midwife: provides primary care, family planning and gynecologic care, pregnancy, childbirth, post-partum, and newborn care.
NP: Nurse Practitioner: provides care depending on specialty
CNS: Clinical Nurse Specialist: Provides care in specialized areas.
CRNA: Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist: Provide anesthesia services
The Virginia Affiliate of the American College of Nurse-Midwives supports ALL of the following Bills. SB 463 and SB 620 are priority bills. The goal of these bills is to increase access to care for the women and families of Virginia through the removal of barriers to practice.
SB 264 - Dance - Nurse practitioners: supports practice outside of a patient care team. Administration bill: Provides for Transition to Practice (2000 hours) in underserved areas and free clinics.
SB 369 - Stanley - Nurse practitioners: Supports practice outside of a patient care team. Supports full practice authority in underserved areas.
SB 463 - Carrico - Nurse practitioners; licensed as certified nurse midwives. Provides for Full Practice Authority for CNMs.
SB 620 - Stanley - Nurse practitioners; eliminates the requirement that they practice as part of the patient care team. Provides for Full practice authority and changes the composition of Joint Boards.
HB 330 - Pogge - Clinical nurse specialists; Board of Nursing may register the applicant. Passed full House committee uncontested.
HB 580 - Robinson - Nurses; adds a definition of "advanced practice registered nurse," etc. Defines NPs, underserved areas CNMs, and CRNAs as APRNs. Also, removes collaborative practice agreement requirement for CRNAs (they are still supervised). Passed full committee uncontested.
HB 581 - Robinson - Nurse practitioners: supports practice outside of a patient care team. Administration bill: Provides for Transition to Practice (2000 hours) in underserved areas and free clinics.
HB 909 - Minchew - Nurse practitioners: supports practice outside of a patient care team. Provides for Full Pracunderserved areas.
